The House on Summer Court

On June 6th after hauling our belongings 17 hrs and spending several nights in a hotel, we finally closed on our first home in Iowa. We left Texas after four years there for medical school and came to Iowa for 5 years of residency. The medical journey is a long and hard one, but it also a wonderful adventure. It has gives us a great opportunity to explore some new places across the US and meet some of the best people. I never in a million years thought I would be living in Iowa but here we are and we are excited to be here.

My impressions so far: It is so green and beautiful in the summer. The rolling hills are covered in cornfields that go on for miles.  The people are so friendly and welcoming.  The weather is crazy! It is July 2nd and I don't think it has even hit 90 yet. Today is in the 60s! We had our first tornado a few days ago.  The whole shebang..the siren, pouring rain, thunder lighting, and crazy winds! Good things we have a cozy basement!

Anyway back to the house! We found our home a few months back when we came out house hunting in April. The pickings were slime in the area where we were looking for homes that fit our "needs". We stumbled on a house under construction that was perfect! We had no idea what it would look like finished but were able to walk through it framed and were given a floor plan. As soon as we decided that this was it we were sent to choose cabinets, flooring, backslash, appliances, lightening, etc. I felt like I had spent the last several years training for this day:) Thank you very much Pintrest and the blog world!

First up flooring. The hardwood was easy to make a choice with...the tile was harder. I wanted to go with a more neutral grey look throughout the house.  After going back and forth with a few different choices, we stumbled on the perfect grey one, shown below.

I have always loved subway tile so I knew thats exactly what I wanted in this house! Again I went with grey:)

Our next choice was the outside colors of the house. There is something so homey about a blue house and our builder highly recommended this Flagstone color. He even drove us by a home he had built in this color! The Sterling Silver is for an accent area above the garage.

We chose (with the help of our builder again) this brick for the front. And in a matter of minutes the exterior decisions were done!

The counter and cabinet choices were a little harder. I love a white and bright kitchen but that wasn't an option. After comparing all the other wood colors to the hardwood I chose I felt like most of them looked cheap in comparison or there would just be too much wood tones! We settled on this dark almost black wood. The interior trim of the house would also be done in this.  Since the cabinets were going to be so dark we decided to go light on the counter tops to lighten it up. We have a combination of granite (on the island) and formica in the kitchen so we tried to choose very similar pieces.

And that was about the extent of our choices made while we were in Iowa. Surprisingly all of them only took a few hours! The lighting was a whole other story!
